The Nintendo Switch 2 launch has not been as smooth for some Pokémon enthusiasts who have recently migrated to the new console. A multitude of fans have reported some serious bugs while migrating their previous games’ save data to the modern gaming platform, resulting in the loss of years’ worth of progression dating back through numerous Pokémon generations.
Many aggrieved fans have taken to internet forums to share their distressing experiences with this data-transfer malfunction, which has notably affected the beloved franchise. In a particular account from a Reddit user, dubbed ThatOtaku26, they expressed their disappointment and anger over losing two decades worth of Pokémon collections and gameplay.
ThatOtaku26 detailed their ordeal in a subreddit dedicated to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Their narration read, “Acquired a Switch 2 recently, proceeded with the initial setup and data transmission processes successfully, however, my Scarlet save file has disappeared. I’m immediately redirected to the language and character creation screens when I attempt to load the game. There’s no trace of my data on my old Switch 1 OLED or the new Switch 2. Despite the data transfer going smoothly, my Scarlet save file has vanished.”
ThatOtaku26 sadly concluded their commentary by noting the loss of their Pokémon collection dating back to the original GBA, an aggregate of 20 years worth of gaming data. The degraded passion in their statement expressed their severe disappointment and thoughts of quitting the game altogether.
However, a little glimmer of hope remains for preserving some Pokémon data during the console’s transition— the Pokémon Home app. This app provides a lifeline to players, enabling them to store up to 30 Pokémon free of charge. A $15.99 per year premium subscription increases that limit to an impressive 6,000 Pokémon. Unfortunately, the application falls short of preserving actual save data for Pokémon games. So, even though Switch 2 owners can house their cherished Pokémon collection during the data transfer, there is still no foolproof method to secure the game data from possible glitches during the transition from the Switch 1 and Switch 2.
Alarmingly, this troublesome issue does not appear to be confined only to Pokémon titles. Another Reddit user, Existing-Possible550, claimed a similar loss across all their saved games. The user mentioned, “I suffered the same fate, but it extends to all my saved games, such as BOTW, TOTK, MK8, Pokémon Sword and Shield, Scarlet and Violet, et al. It feels like I’ve never played before, as I have to start afresh just to regain my previous gaming achievements.”
Despite the escalating issue being brought to light on social platforms, and the consequent turmoil among the Pokémon gaming community, Nintendo has yet to provide any official statement or solutions. As prominent gaming enthusiasts are now reconsidering their gaming choices, it is imperative that Nintendo address these concerns and solve these technical issues promptly, to ensure the gaming community continues to enjoy their products without these discouraging setbacks.
