In the spirit of QuakeCon 2025, the developers, Id Software, have announced a significant update for both ‘Doom Eternal’ and ‘Doom: The Dark Ages’. This update is expected to introduce several exciting new features, enhancing player experiences.

Mod support, initially in beta for ‘Doom Eternal’ launched in 2020, is now available for all game owners on Steam. This long-awaited feature is scheduled for release across other PC platforms within the subsequent weeks. With the integration of official mod support, several changes have been made to the game’s primary menu. Now, players have the option to create a new save game with or without modifications. Additionally, an in-game modification interface now allows players to browse, download, and arrange the sequence of the chosen mods. Already, there is a selection boasting over 700 mods for players to select from.

However, ‘Doom: The Dark Ages’ has not been forgotten in this exciting wave of updates. The latest instalment of the franchise which launched in May, has introduced an adrenaline-pumping mode called the Ripatorium. This wave-based arena mode allows players to customize experiences deciding on factors like the time limit, choice of music, types of adversaries, wave numbers, and more. As a reward for completing the arenas, players can bag a fresh Doom Slayer skin.

Furthermore, Id has made substantial improvements to the ‘Doom: The Dark Ages’ campaign, including adjustments to weapon-swap speeds, advances in player-blocking, and dispensing the ability to regulate the slow-mo shown while performing melee attacks and parries. Now, players have the power to control the pace of combat scenes. Additional modifications encompass weapon balance changes, alterations to the campaign’s music to synchronize better with combat incidents, and improvements to the dragon and Atlan mech segments, resulting in a more smooth-flowing game. A comprehensive list of all the enhancements to ‘Doom: The Dark Ages’ is available in its latest update.

Id Software expanded the challenge of ‘Doom: The Dark Ages’ Nightmare difficulty in the past, while another update introduced path tracing to augment the visual appeal of the game. While the latest reboot of the celebrated FPS franchise has ushered the series into a brand-new direction, the dragon and mech levels are criticized for lacking depth.
