The newest update for ‘Doom: The Dark Ages’ has indeed made its Ripatorium horde mode substantially more customizable. This has unleashed a more potent and agile Doom Slayer, who now possesses the skill to alternate between melee weapons and Shield Runes instantaneously.

The Ripatorium, which was initially introduced in August, functioned as a time-based horde mode, equipping players with the capacity to engineer enemy encounters. With the release of ‘Doom: The Dark Ages Update 3’, the Ripatorium has grown steadily into a round-based arena that allows players to determine the manner in which each round will unfold.

Players now have the liberty to design up to five rounds of enemy combat, with every round consisting of up to 10 succession of enemy waves. Although further changes appear rather less significant, they contribute effectively toward enhancing gameplay. Variations such as modifications to line of sight in arenas and the display of icons over the heads of the last few remaining enemies in a round have been introduced. The inclusion of a passcode system for Ripatorium contrives a pathway for players to share their demonic arenas effortlessly with others. The developers at Id Software have indicated their intentions to collate the finest custom encounters, with the aim to formulate community-made Ripatorium presets.

While update 3 primarily focuses on advancements in the Ripatorium, substantial improvements have been introduced to the overall gameplay of ‘Doom: The Dark Ages’. These improvements include the ability to swap between Shield Runes and melee weapons during combat. This addition endows players with a wider range of lethal implements, as certain runes and melee weapons may prove superior in specific situations than others. This swift interchangeability eliminates the need for players to navigate through multiple menus for changing them.

An additional feature allows players to fine-tune the game’s ‘Brink of Death’ state. Players can now select from Normal and Hard modes. The Hard mode offers a daunting challenge for survival at low health levels, as the game provides limited resources to maintain player stability. Adjustments have also been made to various combat encounters within the campaign, as well as the attack strategies of specific bosses and enemies like the Cacodemon.

The franchise continues to explore fertile ground with ‘Doom: The Dark Ages.’ It has successful interwoven melee combat, seamlessly blending it with traditional FPS combat. The game has received nominations for the category of Best Action Game and Innovation in Accessibility at The Game Awards 2025, further reinforcing the impactful contribution to gaming that ‘Doom: The Dark Ages’ encapsulates.
