In celebration of its 30th anniversary, game creator CyberConnect2 has proclaimed the development of a fresh title in the .hack series, known as .hack//Z.E.R.O.. The game is entirely developed and issued by CyberConnect2, with the green light from Bandai Namco, the IP rights holder. Details about the release timeframe and the platforms on which it would be launched remain undisclosed.
Organized a decade from now, .hack//Z.E.R.O is an action RPG, apparently with no direct connection to its predecessors, based on a virtual MMORPG known as ‘The World’. CyberConnect2 assures a unique focus on the polarity between the game world and the real world. Despite the overlapping title, the game bears no relation to the .hack//ZERO novel penned by Michiko Yokote.
The .hack franchise debuted in 2002, initially as a PlayStation 2 four-part video game series consisting of .hack//INFECTION, .hack//MUTATION, .hack//OUTBREAK, and .hack//QUARANTINE, and an anime prequel named .hack//SIGN. Starting from 2006, another video game trilogy unfolded, named .hack//G.U., which was remastered in 2017 as .hack//G.U. Last Recode and has a prequel anime series titled .hack//Roots. The extended franchise includes other animations, spin-off games, novels, and manga. Watch the teaser trailer for .hack//Z.E.R.O. below.
