Muramasa Revenant Blades Comes To Modern Platforms

Vanillaware and Marvelous used the June 2026 Nintendo Direct to reveal Muramasa: Revenant Blades, a new version of the cult-favorite side-scrolling action RPG that is headed to PlayStation 5, Switch 2, Switch, and PC via Steam. The announcement immediately stood out because it brings one of Vanillaware’s most beloved games back for a new generation, while also marking a rare and notable move for the studio with a PC release. For longtime fans, this is more than a simple port. It is being positioned as a polished and expanded edition that gathers together the best elements of previous releases and adds new upgrades for modern hardware.

The game’s history stretches back to 2009, when Muramasa: The Demon Blade first launched on Wii. It later returned in 2013 as Muramasa Rebirth on PlayStation Vita, a version that refined the original experience and eventually expanded it with additional downloadable content. That Vita release introduced extra playable characters and story campaigns, giving the game more variety and replay value. Muramasa: Revenant Blades now combines all of that content into one package, making it the most complete version of the game to date.

Players will be able to access all six playable characters from the start. The original adventure centered on Momohime and Kisuke, whose journeys formed the core of the base game. Later additions brought Okoi, Gonbe, Arashimaru, and Rajaki into the spotlight, each with their own storyline and gameplay flavor. While Momohime and Kisuke share some overlapping locations, bosses, and narrative beats, every protagonist offers a distinct perspective on the world and its supernatural conflicts. Bundling every campaign together from day one means players will not have to worry about separate DLC purchases to experience the full range of content.

The setting remains one of the game’s biggest draws. The story unfolds in a stylized vision of historical Japan, where legendary blades forged by Senji Muramasa become the center of violent struggle. These swords promise immense power, but they also carry a curse that drives their wielders toward bloodshed and madness. As rival forces battle over the weapons, demons and malevolent spirits are drawn into the chaos, turning the land into a stage for tragedy, revenge, and supernatural warfare. That premise gives the game a strong mythic tone, and it pairs perfectly with Vanillaware’s signature visual style.

Visually, this new release is set to deliver a major upgrade. Muramasa: Revenant Blades will support up to 4K resolution, allowing its hand-painted environments, expressive character art, and fluid animation to shine with far greater clarity on modern displays. Vanillaware has long been praised for its richly illustrated 2D games, and this release looks designed to preserve that artistic identity while sharpening it for current hardware. The result should be especially appealing for players who appreciate games that feel handcrafted rather than purely technical showcases.

The combat is also receiving improvements. The core experience remains a fast-paced side-scrolling action RPG built around swordplay, movement, and stylish encounters, but this version will include updated controls, new combat and weapon systems, and additional gameplay modes and options. Players can expect more than 100 swords to forge, along with numerous skills to unlock, upgrade, and customize. That suggests a deeper layer of progression beneath the flashy action, giving players reasons to experiment with builds and playstyles across multiple campaigns.

Accessibility and localization are another major focus. Muramasa: Revenant Blades will feature dual-audio support with both English and Japanese voiceovers, including full English voice acting for the first time. Text support is planned for a wide range of languages, including English, Japanese, French, German, Spanish, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. That broader language support should help the game reach a much wider audience than earlier versions ever did.

The release is currently scheduled for early 2027. Physical editions are planned for PlayStation 5, Switch, and Switch 2, with standard and limited editions expected. The limited package will include extras such as an art book, soundtrack CD, and a folding screen featuring Vanillaware artwork, making it an attractive option for collectors. Digital edition details for consoles and PC are expected to be shared later.

Overall, Muramasa: Revenant Blades looks like a thoughtful revival of a standout action RPG. By combining the original adventure, the expanded character content, technical enhancements, combat refinements, and broader localization support, this release has the potential to introduce the game to a much larger audience while giving returning fans the definitive version they have wanted for years. For anyone interested in stylish 2D action, folklore-inspired storytelling, and Vanillaware’s unmistakable art direction, this is shaping up to be one of early 2027’s most intriguing releases.

Following a thrilling debut in the Nintendo Direct livestream, Marvelous USA is pleased to announce the triumphant re-emergence of Muramasa: Revenant Blades, an elevated revival of Muramasa: Rebirth, releasing on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Windows PC via Steam. This marks Vanillaware’s long-awaited debut on PC, and the first time the game will feature full English voiceover – alongside new localizations in multiple languages. Currently in development, the game is scheduled for release in early 2027.

Originally released for the Wii in 2009 and PlayStation Vita in 2013, the Vanillaware x Marvelous 2D action-RPG has been refined for modern hardware with support for up to 4K resolution, new combat and weapon systems, as well as additional modes and gameplay options. Muramasa: Revenant Blades will also feature original protagonists Momohime and Kisuke alongside Okoi, Gonbe, Arashimaru, and Rajaki – all originally introduced in the PlayStation Vita version – allowing players to experience all six unique storylines in any order they choose from the start.

Deep in Japan’s past, a great conflict erupts over the ownership of fabled and powerful samurai swords forged by the legendary Senji Muramasa. These swords grant their owner both incredible power and a madness that can be sated only by blood. As various factions clash over these mythical weapons, demons and evil spirits drawn to the bloodshed rampage across the land. These fables explore the fates of six diverse characters whose lives are thrown into chaos by these revenant blades.

Physical pre-orders will be available soon through the Marvelous USA Online Store and participating retailers as a standard edition on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch for MSRP $49.99; and on Nintendo Switch 2, which features the full game on the game cartridge, for MSRP $59.99. A Limited Edition will also be available for pre-order for MSRP $89.99 and $99.99 respectively, containing a copy of the game, a collectible art book filled with Vanillaware’s gorgeous artwork, a limited CD soundtrack featuring select tracks from the score composed by the renowned Basiscape, and a 10”x14” byōbu folding screen featuring even more stunning Vanillaware visuals.
