Final Fantasy Resonance Characters And Combat Revealed

Square Enix has shared a fresh wave of details for Final Fantasy Resonance, its upcoming HD-2D turn-based RPG, alongside a new trailer celebrating the start of pre-orders. The latest update offers a broader look at the game’s cast, major locations, and battle mechanics, while also confirming that the adventure is set to launch on October 22, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.

The game draws its story foundation from the opening arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, reimagining that material as a full-scale standalone RPG. At the center of the story is Rain, commander of an airship squadron in Grandshelt, a kingdom of knights protected by the power of crystals. His mission begins when he is ordered to investigate the weakening barrier surrounding the Earth Shrine. What starts as a royal assignment quickly spirals into a much larger crisis after a mysterious figure shatters the Earth Crystal. Rain returns to find Grandshelt under attack, and after helping rescue the king, he begins a journey to defend the remaining crystals before the world falls deeper into chaos.

Two of the newly highlighted regions help define the world’s identity. Dilmagia, known as the Machinopolis, is a city built from steel and innovation. It is recognized as the birthplace of airship technology, and its legacy is tied closely to the first engineer known as Cid. In this world, the title of Cid is passed down to the greatest engineer of each generation, making it both an honor and a symbol of technical mastery. In contrast, Olderion, the Aquapolis, is a water-blessed capital shaped by crystalline currents and long-standing traditions. Once a major naval power before the rise of airships, it remains protected by the Wardens of the Waters, the prayers of the Maiden of Water, and a revered esper worshipped as the God of Water.

These locations are also home to several important characters joining the adventure. Lid is an energetic airship engineer from Dirnado who works alongside her brother and is considered a strong candidate to inherit the title of Cid. She fights with the help of Mechabo, a mechanical chocobo of her own creation, giving her a distinctive presence both in battle and in the story. Nichol, a strategist from the Olderion Federation, comes from a family tied to the Wardens of the Waters. He is calm, analytical, and often more measured than the heroes around him, though he still finds himself pulled into their dangerous quest.

The update also introduces two major antagonistic forces among the Sworn Six of Paladia. Veritas of the Heavens is a destructive warrior who uses a lance and wind-based abilities in his mission to destroy the crystals. Veritas of the Waters is equally dangerous, wielding powerful water magic in support of the same goal. Their presence suggests that the fight to protect the crystals will involve formidable enemies with both magical and martial strength.

Combat in Final Fantasy Resonance uses a turn-based system built around a visible timeline that shows the order of actions for allies and enemies. This gives players a clear view of upcoming turns and opens the door for more tactical planning. A major mechanic in battle is the stagger gauge attached to enemies. By attacking effectively, especially by targeting elemental or combat weaknesses, players can drain this gauge faster. Once an enemy is staggered, its defense drops and it can lose its chance to act, creating valuable openings.

The stagger system goes further than simple interruption. If a party member staggers an enemy, that character gains an extra action at the end of the turn. If players manage to stagger every enemy on the field, they trigger a sweeping stagger, which grants the entire party an extra action. This creates a strong incentive to coordinate attacks, exploit weaknesses, and build turns around momentum rather than simply dealing raw damage.

Another central battle feature is the vision system. Visions are crystallized essences of legendary heroes, including recognizable characters from across the Final Fantasy series. Equipping a vision allows a party member to access that hero’s abilities and magic, adding flexibility to team building and strategy. Players can discover new visions by finding crystal sanctums throughout the world or by completing character-focused events during the adventure. Sweeping stagger also ties directly into this system, because it enables the use of Resonance, a powerful technique fueled by the party’s equipped visions.

One of the characters connected to this system is Aileen, a weaponsmith who can provide a vision to the player. In combat, she can lower enemy defenses with her Pilebunker, and outside battle she can forge powerful weapons using Adamantite gathered from various activities across the world. Additional visions confirmed so far include heroes such as Cecil, Bartz, Squall, Zidane, and Tidus, giving longtime fans familiar faces to look forward to.

Summons also return in the form of espers. By completing certain side quests, players can unlock iconic beings like Ifrit, Shiva, and Titan. These summons require a large amount of MP, but once called they remain on the battlefield for three turns, assisting the party before ending their appearance with a powerful finishing move. Their temporary but dramatic impact should make them valuable tools in difficult encounters.

Outside the main story and combat systems, the game appears to offer plenty for completionists. Players can search for tablet shards that reward useful items, take part in a variety of mini-games, and battle through a colosseum with its own progression and prizes. As players climb the ranks, they will eventually face famous monsters and familiar foes. There is also a hunt for twelve legendary arms, though these weapons can only be wielded after defeating the ruthless monsters sealed within them.

With its mix of classic turn-based structure, HD-2D presentation, familiar Final Fantasy elements, and a layered stagger-and-vision battle system, Final Fantasy Resonance is shaping up to be a notable RPG release for 2026. The latest reveal gives a clearer picture of a game that aims to blend nostalgia, strategic combat, and world-spanning adventure into one crystal-driven journey.
