After a decade leading Square Enix Co. and Square Enix Holdings, veteran games industry icon Yosuke Matsuda will be stepping down from the role of company president and representative director. Current company director Takashi Kiryu will be replacing him, with the changeover likely to be finalized during the 34th Annual Shareholder Meetings this June.

Matsuda has overseen the growth of Square Enix during his 10-year tenure, with some of the highlights including the release of successful titles, the sales of subsidiary developers, and Square Enix’s entrance into the blockchain/NFT market. At the start of 2021, Matsuda penned a letter to the company cementing their desire to capitalize on the technology and reiterating their commitment to delivering extraordinary entertainment to customers.

In a brief statement released by Square Enix, the changeover was further noted to be part of reshaping their management team and adopting ever-evolving technological innovations. With the shift in roles and the changing business environment, Kiyru is expected to step into the presidential role and usher in a new era of development and creativity.
