In 2024, the classic Nintendo game Earthbound will be celebrating its 30th anniversary. To mark this significant event, the creators have numerous campaigns lined up, including the release of exclusive limited-time merchandise and a number of specials events, some of which will be entirely new endeavors for the Earthbound team. Details about these celebrations can be tracked via the official website or Twitter, although complete specifics are yet to be revealed; some plans are still under development while others are just in the process of being authorized.
Originally launched in 1994 on the NES console, under the name Mother 2 in Japan, Earthbound is a Dragon Quest-style RPG game set in a modern 1990s parody of the USA. The narrative centers around a young boy named Ness who, along with his companions, uncovers that the world has been overwhelmed with animosity by an alien race, the Gigyas. The game’s protagonist embarks on a quest through various extraordinary lands, recruiting new allies to overthrow the Gigyas and restore peace to their world.
Fans and new players alike can now experience Earthbound and Earthbound Beginnings on the Nintendo Switch, as part of the Nintendo Switch Online service.
