Jack Black is set to star in the upcoming Minecraft movie, according to a report from Deadline. Alongside Black, the cast is expected to include Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and possibly Jason Momoa. The movie is being co-produced by Legendary and Mojang/Microsoft, with Warner Bros. distributing. Legendary has previously garnered success with the 2019 Pokémon film, Detective Pikachu, leading fans to anticipate a successful transition of Minecraft to the big screen.

Black is no stranger to video game adaptations, having recently played the role of Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie by Illumination. In that production, Nintendo was heavily involved to ensure true representation of the source material. Questions remain if Mojang/Microsoft will have a similar role in the Minecraft movie, especially as specific details remain scant, despite the film being in the works for nearly a decade.

The plot is known, albeit roughly, and revolves around a teenage girl and her group of adventurers tasked with saving the Overworld from the Ender Dragon. It was initially set to be directed by Peter Sollett, however, it’s unclear if the plot has evolved under the helm of new director, Jared Hess. With a string of successful video game movies recently, will Minecraft follow the winning streak? Only time will tell.
