Square Enix, a noted video game developer, reported a significant dip in profits, down 69.7% compared to the previous year. In response, the company has announced a shift to a new strategy, planning to aggressively pursue a multiplatform approach. As part of their three-year plan, dubbed ‘Square Enix Reboots and Awakens’, they will be focusing more on multiplatform releases versus limited games for specific platforms. This strategy means that previously exclusive games might be made available on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and PC platforms simultaneously, and could include older title releases, aiming to cater to a larger customer base.
The announcement indicates a significant shift from Square Enix’s past launches including popular titles like, Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which were exclusive to PlayStation 5. Although the company plans to expand the reach of its games, the focus will be on maintaining quality rather than quantity, suggesting a drop in its game releases’ frequency. This is a notable move, especially considering the non-profitability of its HD games division, despite the positive sales figures for titles like FF16, FF7 Rebirth, and Dragon Quest Monsters.
Square Enix’s recent financial struggles also saw a loss of nearly $141 million from cancelled projects. These cancellations were due to the company’s shift in strategy towards multiplatform game development. While the cancelled projects remain unnamed, the move highlights a significant turn in Square Enix’s future plans for game development.
