Bethesda has surprise-released an updated combination of Doom and Doom II, aptly named “Doom + Doom II”. The re-release, a free update for current owners of the original games, includes a new single-player episode along with the ability to play online cross-platform deathmatch multiplayer. The package also includes an array of add-ons like Sigil, an episode released by John Romero in 2019, and Legacy of Rust, a new episode created by developers from id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames. In addition, users can access single-player mods via an in-game browser.
The multiplayer aspect of the package now features 25 new maps for deathmatch, making a total of 43 maps to choose from. It supports deathmatch and co-op game modes with up to 16 players. Playing on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox Series X / S allows up to 4k resolution and 120fps. The games feature updated music by Andrew Hulshult, who also worked on the music for Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods DLC, and players can freely switch between new and old music tracks.
The game is now available on a variety of platforms including PC (available through Steam, Windows Store, Epic Games Store, and GOG), Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S, PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch. In addition to this re-release, Limited Run Games announced they’re working on a re-release of Doom on the SNES, set to release in 2025 with only 666 copies available.
