In the heart of every old-school game enthusiast, the name ‘Final Fantasy Tactics’ resonates a note of nostalgia. For some, it’s a reminiscence of the days of their first digital quest; for others, it’s the memory of the intricate strategies that unfolded in battles of wits. After a long wait, the gaming community has been ushered into a pool of excitement as the director of the remastered edition of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, Kazutoyo Maehiro, reveals an interesting tidbit about the game in a recent interview – the remaster began its development journey way back in 2018.
Sitting down with the development team for the game and a few major talents behind the original 1997 release, Maehiro shared intriguing insights on how the mountainous task of creating a definitive edition of this beloved title came to be. This edition comes 28 years after the debut of the original Final Fantasy Tactics and a hefty 18 years from the War of the Lions PSP port.
Maehiro’s journey with this project dates back to May 2018. During a live stream on Niconico Douga, showcasing the original game as a part of the celebration for the second segment of the “Return to Ivalice” Alliance Raids, Maehiro found himself immersed in the classic once again. As he played along with the original game’s Director Yasumi Matsuno, and FFXIV Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida, nostalgia was interwoven with an itch for improvement. He found the antiquated aspects of the user interface a hindrance, which prompted him to contemplate a remastering that modern players could relish. However, his complete commitment to the project was held at bay until the completion of FFXVI.
The news that is a slight bump on the road to elation is that the remastered edition, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, will not contain the bonus content included in the War of the Lions PSP port. The development team, led by Maehiro, turned a thoughtfully critical eye towards the make-up of the modern gaming society. They foresaw the 2025 gamer enjoying a version based more closely on the original release, and hence, decided to lean in that direction for the remastered journey. It’s a move that might prove to be a wise decision, allowing new gamers to savor the essence of the feedstock, unburdened by later additions.
Gamers, mark your calendars for September 30, 2025. The remastered edition of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is stepping into the limelight on multiple platforms, including the Switch, Switch 2, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
Basking in the luminous glow of anticipation, players worldwide are eagerly awaiting this release, tuning their strategies for the new-old challenges that the remastered world of The Ivalice Chronicles is set to bring forth. The coming days promise the thrill of rediscovered adventures, a revived passion for strategic gameplay, and the retro charm of an exquisitely remastered Final Fantasy Tactics.
