D4 Enterprise, a company notable for its work porting a plethora of Japanese retro PC games through their Project EGG series, is now on a new venture. To date, the majority of such releases have been hosted on D4’s own Project EGG site which primarily caters to PC gamers in Japan through a subscription system. The company also releases EGG console versions for Nintendo Switch via the worldwide eShops. However, a recent observation suggests that D4 Enterprise is prepared to expand their EGG console offerings to a global PC audience through Steam by setting up their unique corporate curator page there.
The inaugural title noticed on the page from D4 Enterprise is Hydlide 3: The Space Memories. This port will take its inspiration from the original PC-8801mkIISR version, which debuted in 1985. It’s noteworthy to mention that the Hydlide series, in its entirety, is already available on Nintendo Switch. This includes the 1985 MSX version of the inaugural Hydlide game released in 2024, the subsequent sequel from the same platform released in May 2025, and the Special Version of the third entry from the 1989 PC-9801 launched in the following July.
Visitors can find on the new Hydlide 3’s Steam page, the official screenshots and descriptions. As was the case with the Switch EGG Console versions, this PC port will largely stay faithful to the original Japanese version. However, by default, Hydlide 3 already integrates some English in its interface.
Hydlide 3 was first released as an action RPG by T&E SOFT in 1985. Its protagonist, selected by God for their pure heart, embarks on a journey to seal away an evil consciousness. It brings back the popular collision-based attack system from the previous game, and enriches the gameplay outfitting new magic spells like FIRE, ICE, WAVE, and JUMP. An expressive narrative of good and evil is well-presented through the addition of a new parameter called FORTH (conscience).
The game enhances depth to character development with activities around gathering information via conversation mode, shopping in towns, and a six-time larger map as compared to its predecessor. Highlight of its features included higher standards of quality and quantity. Labeled as an Active RPG at its time, it greatly focuses on action with combat strategies based on monster collision and mode-switching between attack and defense. Players can earn experience points by defeating monsters that enable level-ups and increased strength. In the event of injuries, health can be automatically restored by resting on flat areas.
