Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed plans to globally deploy an enhanced iteration of the PlayStation 5 Pro’s AI upscaler, the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), in the forthcoming weeks. So far, the PSSR has augmented the resolution quality of over 50 titles on PlayStation 5 Pro.
The maiden game to utilize the advanced PSSR version is Resident Evil Requiem. This revolutionized PSSR diverges not only in its neural network but also in its comprehensive algorithm. It strikingly preserves image quality and frame rate at an optimum level. Resident Evil Requiem sought to enhance the playable character’s presentation via an upgraded version of the RE Engine, thus intensifying the horror immersion for players.
Masaru Ijuin, Senior Manager of Capcom’s Engine Development Support Section R&D Foundational Technology Department, shared insights about the game’s development. He revealed that each strand of hair and beard on the protagonist is rendered as an individual polygon, responding realistically to body motion and wind. He added that the display of texture becomes more engaging when the light changes due to overlapping hair strands—an aspect they hope their fans would appreciate.
Emphasizing the enhanced PSSR’s role, Ijuin highlighted that it facilitated the game’s expressiveness by effectively processing intricate details and texture nuances. He extended an invitation to players to engage with an unparalleled level of horror, visual fidelity, and innovative game feel.
In a comparison made between Resident Evil Requiem and the original PSSR upscaling versus the upgraded version, the improvements were evidently visible. Mark Cerny, the PlayStation 5 lead system architect, stated that the algorithm and neural network used in the new PSSR origination from their Project Amethyst, a collaboration with AMD.
With the use of AMD’s FSR 4 upscaling technology, PC gamers have already reaped the benefits of this partnership. With the latest PSSR version, PlayStation 5 Pro users can enjoy six months of technologic refinement.
In March, additional details concerning the advanced PSSR version will be revealed. Numerous existing games will be upgraded to the improved PSSR. Furthermore, a system software update will enable users to select ‘Enhance PSSR Image Quality’ in settings to experience the advanced upscaling with any games that currently support the feature.
