After much anticipation, the animated series based on the beloved video game, Final Fantasy IX, has officially entered its development phase. The project came to light on the EuroVisual official website and promises an engaging narrative, aptly titled ‘Black Mages Legacy.

In late 2025, details about the animated series began making rounds among gaming enthusiasts. EuroVisual later confirmed the project and even provided a title. The inaugural season is announced to consist of 10 episodes, each running approximately 22 minutes – a slight departure from the initial announcement of a thirteen-episode run. While there’s no specific due date mentioned, fans can expect to see the series around 2028.

The production journey of ‘Black Mages Legacy’ was not smooth sailing. Originally birthed at a different production house which unfortunately folded, the series witnessed a time of uncertainty before a new production company stepped in. The series is a licensed project, bearing the approval of Square Enix, although the gaming giant is not directly involved in its development.

The animated series targets a young audience, mainly children aged six to thirteen, expanding on the post-game events following a group of Black Mages, who are presumably the offspring of the beloved FF9 character, Vivi.

The development update stirred excitement among Final Fantasy IX fans, many of whom are already acquainted with the game on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, Steam, and the Xbox store for PC. With the game by their side, fans are eagerly awaiting to watch the saga unfold on their screens.

According to the website’s sneak peek, Black Mages Legacy revolves around characters Imel, Koln, Luciola, Théa, Fala and Doc. These are the offspring of the hero Bibi, who are considered the last dark mages of the four continents. They lead a contented life in the city of ALEXANDRIA, under the protection of friendly and sometimes overly curious inhabitants. However, tranquility does not seem to last forever in the anime, as they stumble upon Mel, frozen in place, at the inn where Koln works. This spooky discovery sets the stage for the plotline, possibly hinting at their father’s enigmatic legacy catching up with them.

Season 1 – In development (Update: Previously the official site said in production and it now says in development) – 2D – 10 x 22 minutes
